Don't settle for Google AdSense
There has been a lot of talk lately about the performance of Google AdSense as a viable source of revenue for bloggers and publishers alike. Recently, a post on TechCrunch inspired a debate about the potential performance of Google AdSense on the MySpace behemoth as Fox and Google have struck a billion dollar deal. While I believe that AdSense is a great source of potential revenue, it is by no means perfect and, in my opinion, needs to be updated to meet the demands of its users.
We are in an interesting position at ProductWiki as we generate our revenue from two different sources of pay-per-click (PPC) advertising: Google AdSense and Shopping.com Merchant Listings. These ads show up on all of our product pages (never at the same time) and each type of ad gets approximately a 50% share of our page views across a broad spectrum of products.
I've compiled data contrasting the performance of Shopping.com and Google AdSense on ProductWiki taken from a one week period at the end of last month.
Taking a look at the most significant of these figures (eCPM), Shopping.com outperforms AdSense by a factor of 4.6!
Here’s a brief explanation of how the ads work on ProductWiki.
Google AdSense
AdSense is very simple to implement. When a product page is requested by a user, simultaneously a request is made to Google Ad Services to deliver a banner ad containing two links from their ad database. The database is populated by advertisers. Google has already analyzed the product page and attempts to deliver the most relevant ads. We have neither control on how the ads are formatted (with the exception of some minor font and colour tweaking), nor which ads are chosen.
You would expect to see very relevant results since the theme of our site is consumer products, but it’s often not the case. In the above example, we see an ad for “creative products” and for a Zen Vision case, not exactly what we were going for.
Shopping.com Merchant Listings
Wherever possible we display links to online merchants who sell the product in question. This is handled by our software interacting with a Shopping.com XML Web Service that pulls a specific set of ads for each of our products. Unlike AdSense, we are able to control both what ads are displayed and how they look.
Why do Shopping.com Ads do so much better?
1. Relevancy, relevancy, relevancy
By far the most significant reason for such a huge gap in performance is relevancy. In our previous AdSense example, the user is presented with two vaguely relevant ads that have only little to do with the Creative Zen Vision:M. Whereas, in our Shopping.com example with the Toshiba Gigabeat, you see links to three reputable merchants who sell the exact mp3 player you’re looking at.
2. Style
Our integration with Shopping.com allows us to style the ads in almost any way we choose, and thus we are able to maintain a consistent theme throughout the page. As far as AdSense is concerned, since we have very little say in how they are displayed, we struggle in creating a consistent theme.
3. The “ignore” factor
AdSense is omnipresent on the Web and, like a boring TV ad, people are getting better at tuning them out. (Take a look at this post by Seth Godin). That portion of our page might as well be invisible.
---
Google does have something that Shopping.com does not – breadth. Their database of ads is much more extensive than anything Shopping.com has to offer beyond products; they have ads for blogs, publishers, services, etc.
So how do you get the best of both worlds: the relevancy and style of Shopping.com ads coupled with the breadth of Google AdSense? Simple. Google needs to allow publishers to control what ads are displayed and how they are styled. Another possible improvement is to allow advertisers to classify their ads across broad categories (product, service, blog, etc.) and then publishers could exclusively select ads from those categories.
In the meantime, don’t merely be satisfied with Google Adsense without exploring other alternatives. While our situation is specific to consumer products, I believe there is likely something out there that will be more prosperous for the theme of your website.
Update: Eric Giguere has written an excellent piece on his blog providing detailed suggestions on what we can do to improve our AdSense performance. We plan to implement these changes and examine how much of an effect they have on revenue.

Or you could try doing some AdSense optimization. I have some specific recommendations for you on my blog.

Might I suggest trying a ValidClick Feed to replace AdSense. Our solution is XML based and allows you to pass a keyword to us. With that info, we display results from our own advertisers, and Yahoo syndication for those keywords. Your eCPM's will almost certainly increase. Shoot me an email if you want to discuss further.

But where do you sign up to display Shopping.com ads on your site? They have no signup for ads, just for merchants....
By krs, at 1:25 PM, August 09, 2006
Shopping.com partner signup. But they vet the applications. Small sites probably have to get Shopping.com ads indirectly through Chitika.
By Eric Giguere, at 1:55 PM, August 09, 2006
You would probably have more luck getting approved for adsense than shopping.com. However, I will try shopping.com and see how it works out.
By Caleb, at 3:05 PM, August 09, 2006
Those shopping ads almost look like affiliate sales. They look exactly like original content. Plus they have pictures. No wonder.
By Michael Martine, at 7:44 PM, August 09, 2006
This is a great topic and wonderful posts to it. Maybe if folks figure out how to use the techniques discussed here it will help improve conversion rates from adsense. Experience with my ppc clients shows adsense conversions almost universally much worse than within the Google network.

What is the relationship between Shopping.com and Chitika?
By Anonymous, at 10:01 AM, August 11, 2006
Chitika data is powered by Shopping.com and CNET.
If you are interested in adding shopping comparison to your site via Shopping.com, etc. you can contact me.

I've signed up for the Shopping.com affiliate program. I was accepted and now there are multiple forms to fill out and send back before I can access their resources. Another thing I had to do was email the people directly for more information. That took a couple days to get a response. One thing about Adsense, it's a lot easier to sign up than shopping.com. Why so many hoops to jump? It borders on ridiculous!

Chitika is pretty much like shopping.com except that they easily accept sites into there program unlike shopping.com, they use the same feed to I believe.

Two words: click fraud
By Anonymous, at 1:57 PM, August 13, 2006
one product that works better than adsense is quigo's adsonar. It allows the website to host it's own marketplace where advertisers bid to specific placements. The revenue per click can be much higher.
By Anonymous, at 2:57 PM, August 13, 2006
Wow, the shopping.com partner membership experience is horrible. Finding info on how to become a partner and serve their ads is harder than solving the Da Vinci code. Filling out the forms afterwards is a nightmare. You've got to hand it to Google for making AdWords so simple.
Ebay really needs to do something about the complexity of the shopping.com experience.
By MD, at 3:21 PM, August 13, 2006
another factor for me is the relevance to non-american websites - google ads are regionally targetted, meaning that all the sellers on my website (which is a New Zealand music website, with a pretty regionalised user-base) sell their products in New Zealand, which is something i wouldn't expect to find with these third part advertising companies.
By fraew, at 3:29 PM, August 13, 2006
I wanted to be unbiased to begin with so I scrolled down to the 2 screenshots and all I can say is that the shopping.com ad ruins the look of a page. Google's ads have never claimed to be the most clicked, they're not huge colorful banners (or even worse, that shopping.com ad thats the size of 4-5 banners), they're discreet text ads. If the purpose of your website is to be a cashcow then use the shopping.com ads, if the purpose of your website is for anything else and you just want some ads on there to cover costs, go with adsense. I like to support sites so I only use adblock on the largest or most annoying ads (banners and seem to shake around or flash) but I block large half page ads.

Adsense blows. 25,000 pageviews, 1 click, 14 cents.

Great article. I think if your website is sales related then it will do well. If not then adsense would be a better fit.

The only thing I know is that it is much easier to apply for Google Adsense than any other revenue-generating scheme. Except for the case of Bidvertiser.com, which seems work almost the same way as Google Adsense.
What really gets you the revenue is the content, keyword, and perhaps a well-placed ads on your site.
By Keith, at 10:45 AM, August 15, 2006
At Google AdSense often serves up ads that not only don't make sense, but the actually antagonize the viewers.
For example, Meetup has a lot of dog lovers Meetups, for various breeds like pugs or Doxies. These pages, because they're about dogs, get shown ads for puppy mills.
Organizers of these Meetups are hard pressed to explain why they have no control over their own pages and what gets shown.
If Google had more publisher controls, they might show fewer ads but would avoid scenarios such as these and the criticism of their service that follows.

Hello. Prompt how to get acquainted with the girl it to me to like. But does not know about it
I have read through one history
Each of you has your personal story; it is your history. Keeping a diary or writing your feelings in a special notebook is a wonderful way to learn how to think and write about who you are -- to develop your own identity and voice.
People of all ages are able to do this. Your own history is special because of your circumstances: your cultural, racial, religious or ethnic background. Your story is also part of human history, a part of the story of the dignity and worth of all human beings. By putting opinions and thoughts into words, you, too, can give voice to your inner self and strivings.
A long entry by Anne Frank on April 5, 1944, written after more than a year and a half of hiding from the Nazis, describes the range of emotions 14-year-old Anne is experiencing:
". . . but the moment I was alone I knew I was going to cry my eyes out. I slid to the floor in my nightgown and began by saying my prayers, very fervently. Then I drew my knees to my chest, lay my head on my arms and cried, all huddled up on the bare floor. A loud sob brought me back down to earth, and I choked back my tears, since I didn't want anyone next door to hear me . . .
"And now it's really over. I finally realized that I must do my school work to keep from being ignorant, to get on in life, to become a journalist, because that's what I want! I know I can write. A few of my stories are good, my descriptions of the Secret Annex are humorous, much of my diary is vivid and alive, but . . . it remains to be seen whether I really have talent . . .
"When I write I can shake off all my cares. My sorrow disappears, my spirits are revived! But, and that's a big question, will I ever be able to write something great, will I ever become a journalist or a writer? I hope so, oh, I hope so very much, because writing allows me to record everything, all my thoughts, ideals and fantasies.
"I haven't worked on Cady's Life for ages. In my mind I've worked out exactly what happens next, but the story doesn't seem to be coming along very well. I might never finish it, and it'll wind up in the wastepaper basket or the stove. That's a horrible thought, but then I say to myself, "At the age of 14 and with so little experience, you can't write about philosophy.' So onward and upward, with renewed spirits. It'll all work out, because I'm determined to write! Yours, Anne M. Frank
For those of you interested in reading some of Anne Frank's first stories and essays, including a version of Cady's Life, see Tales From the Secret Annex (Doubleday, 1996). Next: Reviewing and revising your writing

Help from parents
In August, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors said that the average couple needed to save at least 29,000 to pay for the deposit and stamp duty on their first home.
It pointed out that prices had risen by 184% since 1995, three times faster than take-home pay.

This is a VERY useful post. We really need to learn about alternatives to Google AdSense, for various reasons, being one of the most important the issue of "invisibility".
People are SOOO used to see Google AdSense all over the web, that they just don't pay attention to them. If people mainly ignore Ads, then the Click Through Rate can be very low. And if all of a sudden, for whatever reason, your CTR is much higher, your account could be wrongly banned!
I am following some of the advise offered here, and I am beginning to use BidVertiser. It is VERY EASY to register with them, using this form here.
By the way, I am offering FREE Clickbank Sites for anyone interested. You can earn decent money on Clickbank commisions, learn more here: http://love.costari.ca/free/.
Greetings from Costa Rica !
